Join the Sussex Chelonian Society

Why join?

Joining a tortoise group such as the Sussex Chelonian Society is a great way for tortoise owners in Sussex to access trusted advice, support, and a knowledgeable community focused on high-quality tortoise care.

Whether you already look after pet tortoises, care for tortoises in captivity, or are looking to adopt one, becoming a member can help you better understand their needs and keep them healthy.

From setting up a good tortoise table to meeting heat and light needs, we can help. We guide you in choosing the right heat lamp and UVB light.

We also recommend reliable heating gear. This helps you keep the best body temperatures for healthy, thriving tortoises.

Good care is essential, as poor environments can lead to health problems. With the right support, including regular health checks, you can prevent problems and help your tortoise thrive as a cared-for exotic pet.

Tortoise Clinics & Member Benefits

We run regular tortoise clinics in Sussex, held in Lewes on the first Sunday of every month. These clinics provide essential services for tortoise owners, including:

  • Full tortoise health check
  • Tortoise microchipping
  • Identification and weighing
  • Worming when appropriate
  • Tortoise pre hibernation checks

Our clinics also give guidance on tortoise hibernation. We explain how to hibernate your tortoise safely.

We also cover care during hibernation. We explain what to monitor after hibernation. This ensures your tortoise remains healthy throughout the year.

Attending our tortoise clinics is a great chance to join a tortoise group in person. You can meet other tortoise owners and share advice and experiences.

Ongoing Support & Advice

Free advice is always available by telephone or email, helping you manage all aspects of tortoise care. Whether you need help with heating and lighting, UVB setups, or spotting early health problems, contact us. We will be happy to help.

We also provide helpful leaflets and online resources. They cover daily care and seasonal guidance, including safe tortoise hibernation.
