Are you a tortoise owner, or have you always wanted to adopt a tortoise and learn more about proper tortoise care?
The Sussex Chelonian Society is a friendly and knowledgeable group supporting tortoise owners across Sussex, offering guidance, education, and access to specialist tortoise clinics.
We support pet tortoises of all kinds, including Hermann’s tortoises (Testudo hermanni). We help owners learn how to care for a healthy tortoise year-round.
Tortoises need specific conditions to thrive.
These include a proper tortoise table setup, heat lamps, UVB lighting, and a steady heat source. This helps them regulate their body temperature. Getting the right balance of heat and light is essential to prevent common health problems such as metabolic bone disease.
Our regular tortoise clinics in Sussex offer essential services. These include tortoise health checks, tortoise microchipping, and pre-hibernation checks. We also provide guidance on safely hibernating your tortoise.
We explain how to care for your tortoise during hibernation.
We also cover post-hibernation checks to keep your tortoise healthy. We always recommend you regularly health check your tortoise to spot any early signs of a health problem.
Whether you are new to exotic pets or have years of experience, joining our tortoise group lets you share knowledge. You can ask questions and meet other passionate keepers. To rehome a tortoise or adopt one, we can offer advice and support. We will help you make the right choice.
Dedicated volunteers run the Sussex Chelonian Society entirely from their own homes. As we do not work from a central office, we may not reply right away. Please contact us, and we will get back to you as soon as possible.
